  • Take them to a meal or for a coke and ask what good thing they did that day.
  • Call them to just say you appreciate them!

Social Action for Back-to-School Season by Sharon Halper

  • Have cookies at their door after the first day of school. Then, donate some to a local soup kitchen. Your grandchildren will be exercising their moral imaginations as they enjoy the treat and envision others doing the same!
  • Mail or drop-off a special school item. There are always new ones every year! Donate the same item to a local collection and tell your grandchild that another child will also be enjoying the same item. Another exercise for the moral imagination!

A Note from Bubbe Sharon

Asking Questions and Modeling Behavior

First, ask your grandchild questions so that he or she will learn thinking skills.  Don't ask just simple questions to get one word answers.  Instead, ask open-ended questions so they have to think.  Then, ask probing questions to see how much deeper he or she can go into a subject, particularly a subject about helping others.  When they say they don't know the answer, try this.  "I know you don't know, but if you did know, what would you say?  My son-in-law, a formal principal, taught me that one and it works practically every time. Continue Sharon's note by clicking here.
